The German ticket will be 9 euros more expensive. This was confirmed by North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Oliver Krischer to the German press agency. The transport ministers of the federal states agreed on the new price at a special digital conference on Monday. In the future, the ticket, which allows users to use public transport throughout Germany, will cost 58 instead of 49 euros per month. The new price will apply from 2025.

“The agreement at the special transport ministers’ conference shows that the states want to stick to the successful Deutschlandticket model and develop it further,” said Green politician Krischer, who is also chairman of the conference of transport ministers. “With this price we will be able to keep the ticket attractive and put the financing on a more solid basis.”

Transport ministers already decided in July that the price of the Deutschlandticket should be increased from 2025. However, there was disagreement about the amount of the surcharge: The Pro Bahn passenger association had called for a price increase of 5 euros: “Especially new customers will think about whether they will still buy the ticket. Most people will stick with an increase of five euros.” “I’m sure it’s still there,” association head Detlef Neuss told the Rheinische Post in the summer.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Transport Minister Reinhard Meyer also spoke out against excessive price hikes: “There is very little room for price increases. Every euro counts,” dpa quoted the mayor as saying. “Public transport is an alternative to the car, especially for people in rural areas, if the price is right.”

Bavarian Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter had called for a significantly higher surcharge. Bernreiter said that, according to his ministry’s calculations, the price should rise by 30 percent to 64 euros per month by 2025. Only then can the price cover the real cost of the ticket.

The Deutschlandticket entitles buyers to use local and regional transport across the country. Additional costs are shared between the federal and state governments. The ticket was launched on May 1, 2023 and has since been booked at least once by more than 20 million people. This ticket is especially popular among young people and in the city.
