Podcast transcript: Why it took Apple almost six years to do this

since the introduction of iOS 17.4 In March, Apple’s official Podcasts app came with a useful function: since then, it has been delivering automatically created transcripts that can also be searched. Anyone who is looking for a specific part of an audio program or does not want to listen to the entire program will benefit greatly from this – as well as people with hearing impairments, who can access a lot of new content without any additional help. The “podcast transcription” feature, which actually sounds quite simple, has a surprisingly long background. As the British newspaper The Guardian revealed over the weekend, Apple is working on Since 2018 – So it’s been a good six years of that.

Transcription of podcasts Apple’s app is currently available in English, German, French and Spanish. According to Apple, transcribed documents can be accessed in “more than 170 countries and regions.” Gradually, archive content should also be transcribed, not just new shows. Top VTTPodcasters can also transcribe speaker names. When a podcast is playing, the transcript shows the corresponding position in text, similar to Amazon Whispersync he knows.

According to Apple’s podcast boss Ben Cave, the path to the current function began six years ago. At the time, they wanted to create an index of existing podcasts to make them more discoverable. However, Apple wasn’t satisfied with the feature long enough to make it directly available to users of the Podcasts app.

There are high standards of accuracy. Only advances in other areas of accessibility have made automated transcription possible. “In this case, we took the best of what we learned from reading in Apple Books and from the lyrics in Apple Music,” Cave’s colleague Sarah Herlinger, who leads podcast policy, told the Guardian. Apple Podcasts transcripts now adopt the time-synchronized word-by-word highlighting from Apple Music’s lyrics function and use the font and high-contrast colour schemes from Apple Books.

Apple also implements this function for as many podcasts as possible. “It wouldn’t be fair to arbitrarily limit the number of shows that get the feature,” said podcast boss Cave. Apple believes this is necessary because of accessibility. “Writing should be available to anything (users) want to interact with.”
