Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook Plus aims to launch a new generation of notebooks with Google’s ChromeOS operating system. The manufacturer wants to encourage purchases with a 15.6-inch OLED display (with Full HD resolution, 1920 × 1080 pixels) and new AI functions.

In addition to integrating Google’s Gemini chatbots into the taskbar, Chromebook Plus models will receive updates to a few other functions later this October:

  • “Help me write”: Truncates text, reformats them, or puts them into specific formats. After the October update, it is also available in German
  • “Create an overview for me” (“Help me read”): Summarizes PDFs, articles or websites, initially in English only. Updates with separate paragraph marking and additional languages will come in 2025
  • Live translation with subtitles, for example in video meetings or live streams
  • Microphone and camera improvements for clearer sound and brighter images
  • Transcription in Recorder App

In the upcoming Plus Chromebooks, certain functions can be accessed using a new “Quick Insert” key, similar to Microsoft’s CoPilot key. Samsung’s Galaxy Chromebook Plus is the first to integrate it instead of the CapsLock key – CapsLock still works in conjunction with Fn, in older models, Quick Insert can be used using the combination of Launcher key + F. Next year, Google also wants to integrate an AI image generator in this context.

AI functions all run in the cloud. That’s why Google requires a Google One AI premium subscription for most functions except chatbots. In the future, this will include one year for new Plus Chromebooks and three months for normal Chromebooks (without Plus). After that, subscription currently costs 22 euros per month.

Chromebooks still don’t have processors with massive AI units — so they can’t efficiently accelerate AI tasks locally without using CPU cores and GPUs.

The Galaxy Chromebook Plus has a Core 3 100U with two performance and four efficiency cores, which is a newer version of the older Core i3-1315U. It also has 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD. Google says this is the lightest Chromebook Plus ever, weighing in at 1.17 kg. Sales in Germany are scheduled to start in early 2025 for 799 euros.
