Apple will support the German language in Apple Intelligence from 2025. Bob Borchers, vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, said this in an interview with Heise Online during a visit to Germany in Munich. Of course, this does not mean that the iPhone maker will be able to agree on framework conditions with the European Commission by then so that the company feels confident enough to actually activate the new AI functions. However, language support is a necessary condition for the prompt release of new functions in German. And Mac users will be able to use it as soon as it is available.
The iPhone event on September 9 initially created uncertainty among some users. In its presentation, Apple laid out a future roadmap for intelligence. It plans to start with US English language support in October and cover other English-speaking regions by the end of the year. Support for additional languages was promised for 2025 – but the German language was missing from the list. “It was not a complete list, but only a few examples were given,” Borchers said online.
AI is a big feature of the iPhone 16 generation
The new iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be released on Friday. The A18 or A18 Pro chip built into them is specially optimized for the needs of Apple intelligence. In its keynote video, Apple promoted Apple Intelligence as one of the main features of the new model generation.
Shortly after the first announcement of Apple Intelligence at the WWDC developer conference in June, Apple announced that it would initially suspend publication in the EU because the exact requirements of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in terms of interoperability are still very vague. However, Apple repeatedly emphasized that it would work together with the EU to find a solution. This means that it is possible for German-speaking users to use it on their iPhones and iPads once German language support is complete. However, initially, at least after the launch in October, the US-English version will probably not be usable for you.
No news yet on EU talks
There is currently no news to report on discussions with the Commission, Borchers said when asked. However, he stressed that outstanding questions only relate to the iPhone and iPad, which are classified as very large platforms by the EU. Mac users in the EU will be able to use Apple Intelligence in US English from October. As soon as German language support is made public in 2025, it will also become available to them.
