Anyone who has ever searched for their front door keys in the dark knows: One of the most practical functions of a smartphone is the integrated camera flash, which can usually also be used as a flashlight. Apple knows this too and has given fans of the “flashlight” function (also called “torch”) some new goodies in iOS 18, which was released on Monday.

It was already possible to control the brightness of the True Tone flash – there are currently four levels that can be accessed via Control Center. With iOS 18 there is now an option to control the width of the light beam (beam width). This does not work via Control Center, but rather via Dynamic Island – so you need a properly equipped device From iPhone 14 Pro,

If the flashlight is on, a corresponding icon appears in the display area. If you click on it, you can Configure beam width using swipe gestures. This is also shown in a nice animation. Practically, you can also configure the brightness in the dynamic island. The icon is self-explanatory.

As always, the fastest way to access the flashlight is via an icon on the home screen, which can be accessed even when locked. With iOS 18 it is also possible to install other functions and/or apps for the first time. However, it is advisable to leave the flashlight there. Alternatively you can use the function Even faster via Siri launch.

Finally, there is also another option to make a call: depositing it on the Action button. This is currently available in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, but all four new iPhones since the iPhone 16 have had the additional button integrated. Apple has listed details on how to use the Action button in a separate support document. As is well known, the button can be freely assigned different functions; the most versatile way is to use it with the Shortcuts app, which can be used to configure several features at the same time.
