Apple brings SharePlay to HomePods, Apple TV, and Bluetooth speakers

Apple will now release an entertainment function that was originally planned for iOS 17.4 last March as part of iOS 18. The missing feature is the ability to share content via the SharePlay function on Apple speakers (HomePod, HomePod 2, HomePod mini), Apple TV and almost all Bluetooth speakers. For this to work, the person starting the session must have an Apple Music subscription, including an iPhone. Then there are several ways to share the speaker (or television connected to Apple TV).

If the other members of the SharePlay group have an iPhone, you just have to place it near the session starter’s device and authentication will take place via NFC. After approval, you can load the speaker with any content from the Apple Music catalog and add the ones you wish to the current playlist. Alternatively, access via the browser is also possible: to do this, a QR code must be scanned, which is displayed in the SharePlay window.

This function is reminiscent of similar options that Apple has also provided for CarPlay users since iOS 17, who can determine what is playing in the vehicle through its entertainment system. Apple actually already implemented SharePlay for speakers in iOS 17.4 beta 1, but then removed it again for unknown reasons. Now it’s finally time for iOS 18. The update is currently available for testing in beta stage for developers and is expected to be released to the public in September.

Another new entertainment feature coming to iOS 18 relates to Apple’s multimedia streaming with AirPlay over the local network. It should also be possible to transmit surround sound with spatial audio since autumn. Dolby Atmos is also supported Apple on its website,

This is possible when using AirPlay audio from iPhone and iPad to HomePod, as well as “compatible audio devices from other providers”. Which of the latter are remained initially unclear – Sonos users in particular may have been expecting this.
