Also available: Updates for iOS 17, macOS 14, and macOS 13 – with security improvements

Apart from the major updates of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS 15.1, tvOS 18.1, watchOS 11.1 and VisionOS 2.1, Apple has also provided updates to older operating systems. As of Monday evening, macOS 14.7.1 (Sonoma), macOS 13.7.1 (Ventura) as well as iOS 17.7.1 and iPadOS 17.7.1 have become available for download. As always, there are no new features here, but there are a whole series of security fixes, which is why it is advisable to install them quickly. However, there wasn’t a single update for Apple browser Safari, which is confusing because macOS 15.1 includes several fixes for bugs in the WebKit browser engine.

macOS 14.7.1 It includes around 40 reforms affecting multiple sectors. These include AppleMobileFileIntegrity, CUPS, DiskArbitration, Find My (reading sensitive location data), PackageKit, Kernel, and Siri (reading sensitive data by an app in the sandbox). Apple does not specify three other errors in NetworkExtension, Security, and Spotlight.

Unfortunately, the details of the errors, which range from modification of protected system areas to denial-of-service attacks to reading private information, have become very sketchy recently. Why Apple is doing this is unclear. macOS 13.7.1 Comes with over 30 fixes and three unspecified problem areas. Here too there are flaws of a problematic nature. iOS 17.7.1 and iPadOS 17.7.1 It contains 16 fixes and three unspecified fixes (which were also included in two earlier macOS versions).

Apple now has lists too macOS 15.1, iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 as well as watchOS 11.1, tvOS 18.1 And VisionOS 2.1 The security-critical changes contained therein are published. In Sequoia, Apple fixes about 50 bugs, there are about 25 in iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1. In Sequoia, attackers were able to alter sensitive files (packagekit), read contacts (photos), read parts of private files, among other things. Read browsing history (Safari) or sensitive location data (Find My). Denial of service attacks and modification of system parts were also possible.

The bug in iOS and iPadOS affected Siri (accessing sensitive data), Spotlight (accessing data from the lock screen), the kernel (status leak), WebKit, and Safari. Since the systems share a common base, some bugs from iOS and macOS have also been fixed in watchOS, tvOS, and VisionOS. As usual (unfortunately), Apple only supplies the most current systems with all patches. So if you’re still using macOS 14 or iOS 17, you won’t receive all the bug fixes.
