YouTube can now show ads when you pause a video. The feature, which has been announced for some time, is now partially active, Google confirmed to technology magazine The Verge. The first users who have already seen the new ad format have already reported on social media.

YouTube has already tested the new ad format for paused videos with some advertising partners in 2023. The Verge writes. “Since we received a great response from both advertisers and viewers, we have now expanded ad pause to all advertisers,” a spokesperson told the Magazine.
Videos as well as still images
It is still unclear how widespread the ads are when the video is paused. Heise Online did not observe this in a random sample. Reports from social media also show ads in English when playback is paused – so it is possible that the new ad format is not yet active in Germany or only works on certain playback devices. Either way, in Germany it probably only takes a short while before you see the ad when you press the pause button.
When ads are paused, they appear as still images: there is a paused video On the screenshots posted by users Slightly shrunk to be able to display an advertising poster next to it. Users can get more information about the advertised product via an embedded button.
Amazon also recently implemented a similar ad format: anyone who hits the pause button in Prime Video may also encounter ads.
If you don’t want to see ads on YouTube, you’ll need to subscribe to Google’s YouTube Premium. The standard version, which offers freedom from advertising as well as video downloads and access to YouTube Music, costs 13 euros per month. On the other hand, Premium Lite for 6 euros per month promises only limited ads – with a subscription, advertising can also be displayed for music videos.
