Microsoft Paint has always been an integral part of Windows and serves as a simple but adequate painting program for many purposes. Programmer Isaiah Odhner incorporated the iteration found in Windows 95 through XP JS Paint Bring it back to life with pixel precision. If you need a simple painting program or want to indulge in nostalgia, you can let off steam on a minimalist interface just like in 2000. Odner has only added eye tracking, voice recognition and transparency tools to the familiar functions.
JS Paint runs with JavaScript in the browser. There is also a (not offline-capable) Progressive Web App for the desktop. Both work on macOS and Linux as well as smartphones and come as open source under the MIT license. Users can save their works locally and load their own files; in addition to BMP, JS Paint also supports common file formats such as JPEG or PNG. Otherwise, JS Paint is very similar to the model, including German language support. Developers can find connection options and an API on Github to fuel enthusiasm. One of the goodies is the informative (English) “About” section, which does justice to the annoying animated websites of the late 1990s.
