VisionOS 2: Update aims to make the Vision Pro more productive

Actually, it would be better to call VisionOS 2 VisionOS 1.5. In terms of the range of functions, the update is not a huge success, as might be expected from such a jump in version number. Nevertheless, there has been positive feedback from the first beta testers, although not all of the announced features are yet available for testing. However, if they are available, there should be a jump in productivity when using the headset for regular work.

There is already the possibility of working “properly” under glasses, with support for external keyboards and trackpads and, above all, the so-called Mac Virtual Display, which brings your computer into VisionOS. The integrated Safari browser is also fully functional, and there are also applications with which you can use browser apps more easily and switch between them faster. You can also set up a work environment via the windows that remain in place.

There are some improvements here with VisionOS 2. It significantly expands the Mac virtual display and you no longer need hacks to display more windows. Apple is increasing the resolution for Mac virtual displays. At the same time, there will be a new “ultra-wide mode” with which you can arrange two virtual 4K monitors next to each other, which are curved displays. However, technically, this seems to be more of a challenge, since Apple has announced the feature “later this year”. Accordingly, it will only appear with one of the updates to VisionOS 2.

VisionOS 2 also offers improvements when it comes to peripherals. Mice – including Apple’s Magic Mouse – are finally supported under the glasses. Apple never explained why it took so long. This means that those who don’t like the trackpad can also work normally. At the same time, Apple now allows the keyboard to show up when you’re in immersive mode – such as the popular environment.

“When you’re immersed in an environment, VisionOS 2 recognizes and displays your Magic Keyboard or MacBook keyboard so you can continue typing – on the beach, in the mountains, or even on the moon,” the company writes. The catch: Keyboards from other manufacturers are not explicitly revealed. VisionOS 2 is expected to arrive in the fall, possibly in September or October. Apple Intelligence will be left out at the start and will probably appear for headsets in the spring of 2025.
