IT consulting firm Tiobe has named Python the programming language of 2024 in the controversial Tiobe Index. Tiobe evaluates the twenty most popular programming languages on the web every month and once a year in January selects the winner from the previous year. It is always the language that has made the most gains during the last year. According to the operator, Python saw the biggest increase in ratings with a 9.3 percent increase.

Top programming languages of the last 10 years
A look at the last ten years shows that Python has topped the rankings for the fourth time – but has always been in a race with C and C++.
The fact that Python will be named the best programming language in 2024 can already be seen from the numbers in August. The programming language had achieved a new top rating and gained popularity by more than 18 percentage points for the first time in its history.
Python is gaining ground, PHP is slipping
The C programming language is losing popularity and being overtaken by C++ and Java. According to the current version of the index, this is mainly because C++ is replacing C in many embedded systems.

PHP eventually dropped out of the top 10 in favor of Go. Rust continues to gain popularity, while Kotlin disappointed and lost its top 20 position.
Zig and Mojo are on their way to the top 50
Two new languages, Zig and Mojo, are gradually joining the top 50: Zig has risen from 149th to 61st, while Mojo, introduced only two years ago, has risen from 194th to 68th. Tobe sees a bright future for Mojo in particular and believes the programming language designed for AI will reach the top 20 by 2025.
The Tiobe index is controversial
When calculating the index, operators want to assess the number of engineers, courses, and service providers using the programming language. Tiobe collects it from queries on various Internet search engines. Operators themselves state that the index should be used more to check whether programming knowledge is up to date and to make strategic decisions when selecting programming languages for new projects.
