German game developer Crytek (Crysis, Far Cry) has updated its multiplayer shooter “Hunt: Showdown”, launched in 2019, with CryEngine 5.11 and the new map “Mamon’s Gulch” as well as several changes to the menu and gameplay on August 15. The game has been relaunched under the name “Hunt: Showdown 1896”. The game is free to play on Steam until August 19, earning it an all-time high number of 60,124 concurrent active players as well as many rave reviews. The shooter, which was previously classified as “very positive”, is currently listed as “mostly negative” in Steam reviews. Hunt: Showdown 1896 can currently only be played with the new map, the other three maps are still being optimized for the current CryEngine.

Most reviews are related to the redesigned user interface and severe performance issues and even crashes. For graphics-heavy games, Crytek recommends an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 as a processor, as well as a graphics card with at least 8 GB of RAM (Nvidia RTX 2060 Super, AMD 6600 XT or better). This hardware, some of which is seven years old, is a recommendation, not a minimum requirement, and is extremely moderate, unlike previous Crytek games. The main problem is the game servers, which cannot withstand the onslaught, and there are many players from Russia and China, which is noticeable due to their high latency.

Hunt: Showdown is a so-called extraction shooter: players compete against other players or teams, in groups of up to 12, two, three or alone. The task is to locate a monster, kill it and reach the extraction point with the trophy without being killed by zombies, hellhounds and other players. The western and horror theme, combined with impressive graphics, many contemporary weapons and exciting gameplay, make Hunt: Showdown one of the best shooters on the market for many PvP players. One of the reasons for this is the CryEngine, which enjoys a really good reputation because it has comparatively low hardware requirements with high graphics quality. The current version 5.11 is actually aimed at providing better performance with upscaling technologies such as DLSS (Nvidia) and FSR2 (AMD).

Hunt: Showdown 1896’s free-to-play phase will end next Monday. After that, at least server performance should improve. To please fans disappointed by the UI changes, Crytek still has some work to do.
