Users use Apple’s standard apps voice memos For many things – from recording lectures to interviews and collecting musical ideas. As part of the release of new iPhone models this week, Apple is offering several new features in the application. This includes (initially) a transcription function in English, but also a new multitrack recording. However, the feature is there Apparently only for the two most expensive new iPhones Ready: 16 Pro and 16 Pro MaxWhich are sold from 1199 euros.

Simple principle, but with track separation
The new Overdub functionality makes it possible to add an additional track to an existing recording – for example a musical instrument. Voice Memos should be able to play the first track, but only record new signals – for example singing. “Advanced processing” filters out what comes through the speakers. In addition, the four microphones in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max should enable “professional studio sound”.
The company emphasizes that it is not necessary to wear headphones. In this way, songs can be created step by step and edited later. In a demo video shown at the Apple keynote last Monday, Apple demonstrated this with a musician.
The A18 Pro is necessary, the A18 is not enough
Apple apparently justifies the restriction of the product to the Pro model by saying that at least an A18 Pro is required for post-processing. The new SoC comes with (at least) one more GPU core, and the audio system in the Pro model was tweaked and fitted with four microphones, which should allow for better voice and vocal recording.
Reserving functions for only some models is not a new development for Apple. The group likes to differentiate between Pro and standard models. This year too, the standard models come only with USB 2.0, the Pro models with USB 3.0. The display of the standard models refreshed with 60 Hz, the Pro models with 120 Hz. Even with iOS updates, some functions are reserved only for the new iPhone.
