The Python programming language has achieved a new top rating in the Tiobe Index for August 2024 and has recorded a popularity of over 18 percent for the first time in its history. The Java programming language last reached this milestone in November 2016. Java is the highest-ranked programming language ever achieved with 26.49 percent (June 2001).

Only 8% difference between first and second place
The difference between the first place (Python) and the second place (C++) is just 8 percent. According to Tiobe, the gap has never been this small. The largest difference ever between the top two positions was measured at 9.55 percent in November 2016, when Java topped the ranking ahead of C.

In the May issue, the programming language Fortran reached the top 10 of the index for the first time in 20 years. According to Tiobe, it remained in 10th place in August, one reason for Fortran’s resurgence is the release of new ISO Fortran 2023 definition and the increasing importance of numerical and mathematical calculations.

The Tiobe Index is controversial
But Calculation of the index Operators want to assess the number of engineers, courses and service providers using a programming language. Tiobe collects this from queries on various Internet search engines. Operators themselves point out whether programming knowledge is up to date or not and the index should be used more to make strategic decisions when choosing programming languages for new projects.
