Product Activists: Putting Product Strategy into Practice

Putting product strategy into practice and realizing its successful impact does not seem so easy. In the latest episode of the Productworker podcast, product strategy expert Markus Andrezak is the guest on this topic. The presenter of this episode, Tim Klein, also brought Oliver Winter, strategy expert and trainer in product strategy training courses for product workers, as the second guest. This time Oliver Winter is present as a guest in an unusual role for him.

Tim Klein with two guests delves deep into the question of how to apply the topic of product strategy in practice, i.e. how you can bring it to life and thus have an impact in the often chaotic everyday life of a product owner.

Markus Andrezak puts it succinctly: When ambiguities arise in a team or organization, it is a clear sign that the product strategy is missing or at least not clearly defined. But what do you do if you don’t want to start with big, bulky strategic plans right away? This is where, among other things, “challenge-driven strategy” comes into play — a concept that Markus Andrezak introduces at the end of the talk.

Expert Markus Andreczak recommends moving step by step instead of testing the company’s entire strategy right away. Among other things, he recommends starting regular meetings with the product team in which specific problems are discussed and resolved. The main thing is that these meetings should always have a specific goal and not be reduced to endless banter. This continuous process not only strengthens collaboration within the team, but also slowly but surely forms a strategic direction for the product or service.

Oliver Winter completes Andrezak’s suggestion by emphasizing how important it is to focus on a few but essential topics as a Product Owner. Many teams get distracted because there are many construction sites running at the same time.

Perhaps the most important takeaway from this episode? It is not always necessary to name the strategy task as such or address it formally. Often, it is only through continuous, focused problem solving that a solid strategy emerges. If as a Product Owner you feel that the strategic common thread is missing in your Product Team or your organization, you can simply start by clearing the biggest ambiguities — and see how a clear product strategy gradually evolves from this.
