Powerstation Afferi P210 in the test: Guarantee like a Kia, round like an iPhone

Power stations are mobile solar generators with an internal battery that also produce mobile electricity using solar panels and make it available to 230-volt consumers. In the past, how much power and capacity is available was usually a question of budget. If you were looking for a version with enough power and storage, you had to look deeper into your pocket or compromise on features. When it comes to everyday use, it’s less about the individual best values ​​than about good overall performance. And here in the past the Fossibot F2400 (test report) and TallPower V2400 (test report) were the leaders, each with 2400 watts and 2 kWh.

Our test shows that the technically comparable power station Afferi P210 currently costs around 949 euros (active coupon) in practice. We were provided with the test device by the manufacturer. Besides the basic and security functions working reliably, there are a few other points worth mentioning that we noticed during the tests:

The Powerstation P210 comes to the customer with instructions, a solar charging cable with MC4 to XT90 connection and a power cable for charging from a socket. A small bag with a rain cover is also included – very practical if you want to use the device outdoors, for example while camping. The cables do not fly around separately in the box, but are stored in the accessory compartment on top.

The design of the power station is modern and practical, and the workmanship is of very high quality. The P210 measures approximately 40 × 29 × 32 cm and weighs 22 kg. The material, gap dimensions and pressure points of the function buttons leave a good impression, as does the large and bright status display. To connect consumers, there are three Schuko sockets with an output of up to 2400 watts, two 12-volt outputs of up to 25 amps and six USB ports of up to 100 watts via PD.

The UPS function, which is only integrated in some models and in which the power station is connected between the power grid and the consumer, is also on board. Here, the mobile socket operates in pass-through mode: When the battery is fully charged, power is passed through it to protect the battery. If the power goes out, whether for a few seconds or hours, the P210 switches to the internal power storage in a fraction of a second and you can continue working without problems. Due to the short switching time, our PlayStation, computer and 3D printer (Theme World) continued to work without problems in the test even after installing a fuse on the home socket.

The power station is charged either via a power cable at the socket, via the cigarette lighter or via photovoltaics. However, charging in the car is not very realistic due to the long charging times of large batteries. The manufacturer has recognized this and therefore does not include a 12 V power supply.

Charging on a solar panel with 400 watts peak (Wp) worked without any problems in the test. It’s a shame that the maximum possible here is 500 Wp, because recharging takes at least four to five hours even under ideal conditions – even longer at the end of summer. Other models, such as the Jackery Explorer 2000 Pro (test report), allow up to 1000 Wp and more.

If you charge at your home socket and use the maximum charging power of 1100 watts, it will take about two hours to charge 100 percent. If an additional 500 watts of solar power is connected, the charging time is reduced to 90 minutes. If required, the charging power can be reduced to 300 watts, 500 watts, 700 watts and 900 watts by long pressing the AC button. With a reduced output of 500 watts it takes four and a half hours, with 300 watts it takes about six hours until the battery is full again.

With this charging time, the P210 is one of the fastest chargers among power stations, just like the Faucibot F2400 and TallPower V2400. Especially cheaper devices often have a lower charging power and then take significantly longer despite their lower capacity.

With a maximum sustainable output of up to 2400 watts, this power station is suitable for most electrical consumers. In practice, there are only a few tools that actually require more power, which we can confirm after testing with an electric grass trimmer, chainsaw and hand-held circular saw. We ourselves have only one or two tools with a high starting current. Even kettles, toasters and deep fryers can be powered from the P210. Even powerful power tools, a submersible pump and other garden tools worked perfectly during the tests. To trigger the overload protection, we had to use our large chop saw with a starting current of over 3500 watts. This reliably triggers the internal safety mechanism of the power station after about one to two seconds.

How long appliances can be run on a power station until their capacity is exhausted always depends on the performance of consumers. Energy-intensive appliances, such as an 1800-watt camping hotplate, will only work for a little over an hour. We can power our 950-watt toaster for about two hours, and our PC workstation, including a printer and multiple monitors, for a full working day.

So in total in three capacity tests, we use different consumers with different power requirements. At high load (toaster with 950 watts) we can extract about 90 percent of the nominal capacity (2048 Wh) and therefore 1822 Wh, which is slightly above the average value. In the test on a PC workstation with an average output of about 400 watts, we received about 84 percent or 1720 Wh from the P210. This result is average – we usually talk about 80 to 85 percent of usable energy. The efficiency is the worst in the last one with a power consumption of only 180 watts. Here we can only use about 78 percent (1597 Wh).

However, such a high yield and efficiency cannot always be achieved. The losses are only so low with strong 230-volt consumers and when using a direct current output. At 230 volts and only 10 watts of output power, you do not come close to the rated capacity. The inverter losses are quite high in the long term. If you need so little power, you should use a 12-volt output – here the losses are slightly lower. However, this is the case with all power stations.

In addition to performance data, power stations differ mainly in terms of volume. Although most devices are barely audible at low power output, this changes quickly when the output exceeds 400 watts. Some models are so noisy that you don’t even want to sit or sleep near them.

But this does not apply to the Afferi P210, it is whisper quiet. At loads of up to 2400 watts and in limited charging mode, we measured a maximum of less than 32 dB(A) from a distance of one meter – but only when the fans are on at all. These are usually off during power distribution, even under high load. The power station still does not overheat. Afferi has done a great job with ventilation management.

The P210 is therefore also suitable for use in the living room or bedroom – a big plus point compared to the Focibot F2400 and Tallpower V2400 – the ventilation is also tolerable here, but overall it is louder and used more often.
