Peugeot electric cars get more range

For a long time, electric cars were only suitable for long distances in the limited range of the Stellantis group, which includes brands such as Fiat, Citroën, Opel and Peugeot. The maximum 54 kWh gross combined with 100 kWh peak charging power is not top value today. But recent new releases have significantly improved energy content and charging performance. The Peugeot models E-3008 and E-5008 can now be ordered with a battery that combines 96.9 kWh net with 160 kW of charging power and – for the first time – pre-conditioning of the battery cells.

This means that the scope has increased significantly compared to what was normal in the group for a long time. In WLTP, Peugeot promises up to 698 km for the E-3008 and 664 km for the larger E-5008. If you calculate with a consumption of 20 kWh/100 km, you can expect a range of 450 km and a solid safety reserve. Apart from this, charging should be much faster than before. However, even with 160 kW peak charging power, Stellantis is still not one of the champions in this field. The manufacturer says that it takes 27 minutes to charge from 20 to 80 percent. Therefore the average net charging power in this window is 129.2 kW. Charging losses still have to be added. Under optimal conditions the 150 km WLTP range can be recharged in 10 minutes.

The company treats the topic of battery preconditioning with great care. The objective is to bring the cells into a temperature range that allows maximum charging performance without damaging the memory. This applies in mid-summer and especially in winter. The version now offered with a 96.9 kWh battery is the first to receive preconditioning from Stellantis. The smaller 73 kWh battery is expected to be available from May 2025. Until then, the preconditioning of the larger battery is subject to several conditions: It starts automatically only when the vehicle is charged. Additionally, the charging target must be 100 percent and interior pre-air conditioning must be active. Compared to the competition, where preconditioning is often already part of the charging scheme, Stellantis is a step ahead of itself. When asked, Peugeot announced that with the next model year change in May 2025, preconditioning should be possible while driving.

The larger battery is only offered with a 170 kW electric motor. The E-3008 is offered from 52,750 euros, the larger E-5008 from 55,250 euros. For example, the VW ID.4 GTX or Tesla Model Y with a larger battery and all-wheel drive also works in this financial environment. The Opel Grandland, which has grown significantly over its predecessor, will also be priced similarly to an electric car with a larger battery.
