Nintendo: Switch 2 sales will start in 2025

No big deal: the Switch 2 is pretty much identical to its predecessor. Nintendo has released a video of the new hybrid console, giving the new version a first look. The video mainly shows off small design changes: the new Switch 2 has a revised stand, a new docking station and is painted entirely black – including the Joy-Con, which can still be removed. Can, but this time it comes into place magnetically.

It can also be clearly seen that the new model is much larger than the previous Switch. Still, the Switch 2 doesn’t deviate too much from the concept that made the first version so successful. The console can also be used on mobile and television. The two Joy-Cons can then be put back together to form a single controller. Nintendo is likely to improve the Switch’s aging hardware with the new version. As the leaks indicate, Nintendo hasn’t revealed any details about the hardware yet.

The Switch 2 is scheduled to hit the market in 2025, but there’s no exact date or price yet. Nintendo plans to announce more details in a live stream on April 2. Interested users will be able to try out the console at an event in Berlin from April 25 to 27.

Rumors about the Switch 2 have been circulating for months: photos of the processor appeared online in early January. Last November, Nintendo commented on the Switch 2 and promised that the new console could also play titles that were originally released for the Switch first. Nintendo confirmed this again in the video – the Switch 2 can also play cartridges for the Switch. “Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2,” Nintendo warns without providing further details.

However, future games will at least partially work only on the Switch 2. The video shows an excerpt from a previously unannounced “Mario Kart” title.

With 146 million copies sold, Nintendo’s Switch is one of the most successful game consoles of all time. Only the Nintendo DS family and the PlayStation 2 were sold more often. Recently, Switch sales have slowed considerably – perhaps also because many fans were already expecting a successor.
