Vodafone is restructuring its mobile phone tariffs. From September 26, some “Gigamobil” tariffs will nominally have more data volumes than before. The provider also simplifies the tariff portfolio. “We are significantly upgrading our Gigamobil tariffs and providing our customers with what they need most: more data for worry-free surfing on the mobile Internet,” says head of private customer Marc Albers.
The new tariffs have a contract period of two years and include telephony and SMS, 5G, WiFi calling, a flat rate for 5G and EU roaming. The “Gigamobil XS” for 30 euros per month has 7 GB of data volume. The “Gigamobil S” with 25 GB costs just under 40 euros; for ten euros more you can get the “Gigamobil M” with 50 GB. The “Gigamobil L” tariff for 60 euros has 280 GB; there is an unlimited flat rate with the “Gigamobil XL” for 80 euros.
On paper, the new tariff has a higher data volume than the previous tariff. Nevertheless, an accurate comparison is recommended. A marketing campaign with doubled volume and a lower monthly price is currently underway. The tariff level “S” is currently available for 32 euros with 24 GB, the tariff level “M” is available for 40 euros per month with 50 GB. The tariff period here is also 24 months.
Delete unused volume
In all limited tariffs, unused data volume can be carried over to the next month. Anyone who has a Vodafone landline connection will receive a 10 euro discount on the monthly tariff. In addition, customers who combine landline and mobile communications (“Gigacombi”) can enjoy unlimited mobile surfing from the tariff level “M”.
For apprentices and students aged 18 to 27 there are the “Gigamobil Young” tariffs, which are characterized by greater data volume and cheaper prices. The “XS” tariff offers 14 GB for 20 euros per month. “S” includes 50 GB for 30 euros, “M” includes 100 GB for 40 euros. The “Gigamobil Young” tariff also includes 280 GB, but at 50 euros it is a ton cheaper than the normal tariff. “XL”, a flat rate for young users, costs 70 euros per month.
The same applies to the “Young” tariff: the unused volume is carried over to the next month. There is also a discount of 10 euros if you have a landline connection with Vodafone, but only from the tariff level “S”. The actual flat rate occurs when there is a parallel landline connection in the tariff level “L”.
Marketing manager Mario Mester explains the significantly increased data volume in the Young tariff with the different surfing habits of the younger generation: “Young people use three times more data volume,” says Mester. This is mainly due to media consumption: a lot of videos, a lot of social media.
Existing customers can switch
The new tariffs will be available from September 26 and will have a duration of 24 months. Additional SIM cards for family members are available as before: terms range from 5 GB for 10 euros to a flat rate for 35 euros. Existing customers can switch to the new tariffs. If the data volume is used up, the surfing speed is reduced to 64 KBit/s in all tariff variants.
Vodafone Germany is currently in a difficult phase. The loss of the extra charge privilege puts the fixed network business under pressure. The number of customers in mobile communications is also falling. The new head of Germany, Marcel de Groot, is nevertheless optimistic about the future: “We have set ourselves the goal of growing again in the next financial year.”
