Huawei introduced new wearables and tablets in Barcelona. The Chinese manufacturer offers its Watch GT5 Pro and Watch GT5 in different sizes and designs, which also have different prices.
Depending on the model, the Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro has a housing made of steel, titanium or ceramic. The OLED display of the watch displays 466 x 466 pixels and automatically adjusts to the brightness of the environment. In addition to the touchscreen, the watches are operated via a rotatable and pressable crown and another button. With built-in sensors, they record health parameters such as heartbeat or blood oxygen level, provide information on sleep quality and calculate individual stress levels. The watch can also make an ECG. When paired via Bluetooth, you can also make phone calls from the watch; it also has a microphone and loudspeaker built in. The watch, whose housing is protected according to IP68 and holds up to 5ATM water pressure, does not support WiFi.
With a 524 mAh battery charge, Huawei promises a runtime of ten to 14 days, which is extremely long for a smartwatch. In the first training lap, the charge level dropped by only five percent after running for an hour with GPS and the heart rate monitor activated, which is a very good value. Charging is done via a magnetic shell, which should attach to the Watch GT5 Pro a little more firmly.
The GT5 Pro 42 millimeters in ceramic is priced at 599 euros, while the metal version with a leather strap costs 449 euros. The 46-millimeter GT5 Pro is available in titanium for 499 euros or in steel and with a black rubber strap for 379 euros.
Watch GT5 without ECG
The technical data of the Watch GT5 almost does not differ from the Pro version; it is also protected from the elements and has the same sensors and display. The battery and specified running time also do not differ. Functional setting only: Only the Pro model supports ECG. The GT5 is only available in metal, but is available in more color variants: black, brown, blue, white and gold. At 41 millimeters, the smaller version is slightly more compact than the Pro at 42 millimeters.
The GT5 in 41 millimeters costs between 249,299 euros depending on the variant. The larger version with a 46 millimeter diameter costs 249 to 269 euros.
With the Watch D2, Huawei is also relaunching its smartwatch that measures blood pressure. The bracelet has a thin cushion inside, which is filled with air by a small pump for measurement. The Watch D2 has a rectangular OLED display with a resolution of 480 x 408 pixels and a diagonal of 1.5 inches. The battery capacity is 524 mAh. Like the other new watches, the D2 is compatible with Android 8.0 and iOS 13.0 and is protected against water and dust ingress according to IP68. The starting price is 399 euros.
Two new tablets from Huawei
Huawei’s two new tablets, the MatePad 12X and MatePad Pro, will also be available in stores from October. The MatePad Pro has an OLED display with a resolution of 2800 x 1840 pixels and a 144Hz refresh rate in a 3:2 aspect ratio, with a maximum brightness of 2000 cd/m² according to the manufacturer. The glass surface is matte, which keeps out 99 percent of reflections. In combination with the Huawei M Pencil, Huawei promises an experience similar to writing on paper.
The battery capacity of the MatePad Pro is 10,000 mAh and it can be charged with power up to 100 W. The total weight of the tablet is 508 grams.
The MatePad 12X is similar in size to the Pro, but has a normal glossy screen. Huawei offers a keyboard for the 12X as well as the Pro to make the tablets usable as work devices.
Both Huawei tablets run on the Harmony OS operating system, which is based on AOSP. Google services are not officially supported, but some can be installed using assistants such as MicroG. The MatePad Pro costs 999 euros with a matte display and 849 euros with a glossy screen. The 12X costs between 569 and 649 euros
