Netflix is giving its customers a new option to add additional members to their subscription. Additional members are people who can share a Netflix account, even if they do not live in the same household with the account holder. An additional member normally increases the subscription price by five euros. Now with the announced option it is slightly cheaper, namely four euros. Disadvantage: The additional member will have to watch ads.
The previous option for additional members remains the same. Basically, those who want to use a second account now have two options:
- You can use the subscription ad-free. The account holder pays an additional five euros per month.
- You can use the subscription, but you will see ads. The account holder only pays an additional four euros per month.
You should be able to switch back and forth between the two options at any time.
not particularly attractive
Netflix writes in its statement, “The version with ad integration is intended for users who want to access the entire Netflix program inexpensively and provides an inexpensive and flexible solution for sharing Netflix with others.” However, the saving of one euro per month is quite small and looks decidedly unattractive compared to the standard option – especially when you consider how lucrative advertising is for Netflix.
A comparison with Netflix’s different subscriptions also makes this clear: The standard subscription costs 14 euros per month, but the standard subscription with advertising, which is the same apart from the ads, costs only 5 euros per month. Here the price of the advertising option is only 35 percent of the option without ads. However, for additional members, the price of the advertising option is 80 percent of the price that Netflix charges additional members without ads.
Additional members further banned
Nothing changes for account holders: they will continue to receive all the benefits of the booked subscription. The possibility of adding additional members to a subscription is still only available in two subscription levels: in the standard Netflix subscription you can book one additional member, in the Premium version you can book a total of two additional members. There is no way to book an ad subscription yourself and add an additional member with ad.
New ad option for Additional members Available in Germany starting Tuesday. The option is also available in the US and UK. According to Netflix, the global launch will take place on October 28 in all markets where ad-free subscriptions are offered – except Japan.
