Suspect in murder of US insurance boss shot himself, Apple Intelligence reports BBC headline was factually incorrect, an iPhone screenshot published by the BBC shows. It is unclear what the original headline of the article, which was distributed as a push message, actually was.

The BBC criticized the inaccurate summary of Apple intelligence. The small icon at the beginning of the text indicates an AI summary.

The BBC requires that readers can trust the information it publishes, including smartphone messages, A spokesperson for the British public media agency stressedThe broadcaster raised concerns with Apple and asked the manufacturer to “fix the problem.”

Citing other reports on social media, the BBC says this type of misinformation is not an isolated incident. This includes a push message from The New York Times, summarized by Apple Intelligence, that said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested – which neither happened nor was reported by The New York Times. In addition to the misleading summary, both screenshots also show headlines that were correctly shortened by Apple Intelligence.

Apple introduced AI summation with iOS 18.1. This is introduced as a new feature automatically when Apple Intelligence is activated. If multiple messages from an app accumulate on the lock screen, Apple Intelligence provides an AI overview of the content. This was originally only possible in American English, but since iOS 18.2 it is also available in British English. It is expected to operate in German from April 2025. Even now, Apple Intelligence already summarizes German-language messages into English – sometimes better, sometimes worse.

Bizarre message summaries from Apple Intelligence have already caused a stir on several occasions in the context of private messages – for example in messaging apps – these are sometimes unintentionally funny. Apple still classifies AI functions as beta.
