Manipulated images and disinformation: WhatsApp is testing reverse image search

0

WhatsApp is currently letting test subjects test a new beta version of the messaging app that integrates Google’s reverse image search. Users can find out directly in the app if an image is disinformation or has been manipulated. Currently the image has to be saved first and then uploaded to reverse search to check it this way.

WhatsApp beta version 2.24.23.13 arrives too late for the US presidential election; Voting is almost complete. But in election campaigns like these, images repeatedly emerge that cast one party or the other in a bad light – or make them look falsely good. There is also a possibility of foreign influence. A few weeks ago, Meta kicked Russian state media out of Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp.

But reverse image search can certainly be used for other things too, like getting background information. If someone sends a photo of an interesting place, the recipient can quickly find out where that place is and how to reach there by doing a reverse search. Even supposedly famous celebrities can be immediately identified by name if the sender does not provide this information themselves.

Reverse image search in WhatsApp beta version 2.24.23.13 can be accessed via the three vertical dots at the top right of the app’s image view. There you will find the new menu item “Search the Web”. WhatsApp promises to upload only the image to Google, not any other information like messages or user data. WhatsApp does not check or share the image itself. Beyond that, the use of this function is of course left up to the user; This is optional and is not done automatically in the background.

The reverse image search feature is not only more convenient than manually checking background information, but it also gives users more control and transparency over images shared in messaging. WABetaInfo writesBefore sharing sent images with others, users can now instantly check whether they have been tampered with or not.

Currently, reverse image search is only available for registered WhatsApp beta testers. This function is likely to be integrated into a new version of the app in the next few weeks, which will be made available through the respective Apple or Google app stores or updated through automatic updates.
