iPhone 16: this is what we already know about the next generation of Apple smartphones

0

At the moment, four new iPhone 16 models are expected, which will probably hit the market in about two months. Apple is likely to change the form factor, but the models will still be called the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. However, a fifth (high-end) model called the iPhone 17 Slim could be added in 2025.

It already seems clear that Apple is equipping all four new iPhone 16 models with the new A18 SoC. This would be a real upgrade for the standard models, as Apple has always used the SoC generation from the previous year. But this year the company apparently wants all devices to be up to date – perhaps also due to the marketing of Apple intelligence. According to the leak, all four are wearing new models Identifiers iPhone17.1, iPhone17.2, iPhone17.3, iPhone17.4 and iPhone 17.5 (One of which could represent the new iPhone SE, but that’s not expected before 2025.) For comparison: The current four iPhone 15 models are internally called “iPhone 15.4” and “iPhone 15.5” (iPhone 15 and 15 Plus), as well as “iPhone 16.1” and “iPhone 16.2” (iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max).

However, this does not mean that all devices are equally powerful. Apple could install a standard version of the A18 in the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, but an “A18 Pro” with more power and possibly more RAM in the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. Benchmarks will show what concrete effect this has. Apple is said to have high hopes for iPhone 16 sales and has ordered 90 to 100 million chips in the first round from chip maker TSMC – at least 10 million units more than for the iPhone 15, analysts claim.

The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will have larger screens with smaller display bezels. The devices are believed to grow to 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively. The action button is eliminated in all models, while an additional “capture button” is planned for the Pro and Pro Max, which can be used to take photos or start a video recording.

It can be speculated that Apple will eventually change its buttons to solid state. The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will receive a new camera arrangement so that they can also record spatial video for Vision Pro. The lenses are mounted next to each other. Wi-Fi level 7 is for all devices.

Apple is also working on thinner MagSafe magnets, which in turn could help make the case a little thinner. However, the weight of the device could increase slightly, especially the larger Pro model. The OLED screens are said to be slightly brighter and more energy-efficient thanks to micro-lens array technology. The thinner screen edges in question could be the result of a new OLED finish with Border Reduction Structure (BRS). Faster 5G chips – still from Qualcomm – can also be expected. It remains to be seen whether mmWave support will come to Europe, but it will happen anyway for industrial applications only It supports.

The Pro models are reportedly switching to the Snapdragon X75. There are also a lot of changes to the cameras. The ultra wide-angle module is supposed to be brighter by adopting “super pixels” from the wide-angle sensor. The telephoto lens should end up in both Pro models, not just the Pro Max model. There were also rumors about a “super periscope” lens with significantly more optical zoom. However, nothing has been heard here for quite some time. When it comes to the battery build, Apple is reportedly using a stacked structure that promises slightly more capacity. The battery could be in a new stainless steel housing that allows for higher energy density but is also easier to replace.
