Anyone who buys an iPhone should think carefully about the storage amount they choose – because, as is well known, the devices can neither be upgraded later nor do they have slots for micro SD cards (which is no longer the norm for smartphones anyway). However, some providers offer external solutions. Accessories specialist Zik has exactly that “USB-C Magnetic Extended Storage for iPhone 15” has now been done and, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most modern version of such hardware to date.

Small display and light weight
The device is a flat box equipped with an integrated USB-C plug. In normal use, it is simply inserted into the USB-C port of the iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. Additional capacities of 128, 256 and 512 GB or 1 TB are available, with a weight of less than 20 grams.
A color screen is integrated as an additional function. It shows four values: the available memory in GBytes including the current throughput rate, the temperature, and the wattage used for charging. The expanded storage system also has a USB-C port that can be charged at up to 27 watts (Fast Charge PD).

If you don’t like pressing the storage expansion to the bottom of your cell phone, you can also place it on the back of the iPhone using the additional redirection cable provided. An integrated magnet is used for this purpose, which does not have MagSafe certification (at least currently), but should hold well according to the manufacturer. The transfer rate should be sufficient to record ProRes videos in 4K at 60 Hz. This is particularly interesting in iOS 18 because it is then possible to write content directly to USB-C media – even from camera apps. Until then, you can access the contents of the expanded storage box through the Files app, among other things.
Zik sells the USB-C Magnetic Extended Storage for iPhone 15 for just under 60, 75, 94 and 122 euros, which are entry-level offers, prices will be increased slightly later (when exactly is not clear). 128, 256 and 512 GB variants are available immediately, the 1 TB version is not available at the moment. Postage and, if applicable, customs fees must be added to the prices. Delivery takes place from China, so it takes a little longer.
