Weekend reports are correct: Developers can try out parts of the AI that Apple has to offer for the first time. Apple released three developer betas on Tuesday night: iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1. These are offered in parallel with the “normal” betas iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, whose final versions are expected to arrive in September (or October for macOS 15).

Willing participants from Apple Developer Program You can decide whether you want to use the Apple Intelligence Beta or not – this is possible through the system settings. You can also activate the new AI system there after installation. However, there is a waiting list – as the developers report, they only had to wait a few hours.

Features that Apple has already released include a new look for the voice assistant Siri, the ability to quickly switch between text and speech when working with Siri, Apple’s writing tools in American English, new mail categories and “Smart Reply” (the latter also for the Messages app). Communication with Siri should be more fluid and the voice assistant should retain more context. Incorrect pronunciation is no longer a big problem and Apple has also prepared information about products and support documents for Siri.

Writing tools include rewriting and correcting text as well as summaries in Pages and Notes. Photos understands natural language and uses it to compile memories. Search also includes video. A new Focus mode can filter out uninteresting notifications.

Apple’s image generators are not yet available, neither Image Playground nor Zenmojis. Photos does not yet include new AI photo editing options, nor sorting notifications by priority or Siri access to app operations and screen content. iOS 18.1 can record and transcribe phone calls. An “Apple Intelligence Report” summarizes the collected data and also allows export. Apple Intelligence runs on Macs and iPads with an M-chip, on iPhones only on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
