Many users use Apple’s integrated TV app to play movies and series (mostly purchased or rented). Anyone who wants more here – including access to their home NAS – has been well served for years with independent developer Firecore’s video player Infuse. It is now officially available new version 8Which was preceded by a long beta phase. The update improves the interface and supports another platform – which should make the app one of the most universal multimedia players along with the open source project VLC.

The Infuse 8 comes with a more modern layout that is supposed to be cleaner. Due to improved loading routines, preview videos and other elements appear more quickly on the Start screen – especially if they have to be reloaded from the server. The playback function has been changed and now shows frequently used options such as changing playback speed, subtitles or audio tracks more directly. The manufacturers promise “precise controls and silky-smooth playback.” Adjustments continued to be made to existing operating systems such as iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
There’s also an entirely new Infuse version for Vision Pro, which was announced in the spring. It offers most of the features of the other versions – including support for Kodi, cloud services or Plex – and plays significantly more codecs than Apple’s on-board tools. However, what is currently missing is support for 3D movies and/or immersive videos in VR180 and other formats. It’s a shame, but it should be distributed “soon”, but due to the long beta phase it is still out of reach.
Fully cross-platform
With support for Vision Pro, Infuse 8 now runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Apple headsets. This means that, except for the Apple Watch, not a single important Apple platform is missing. Infuse 8 will continue to be sold as a subscription.
Rates are 1.99 euros per month and 14.99 euros per year. DTS and Dolby Audio can be activated for free currently. If you want to purchase Infuse “for life”, you will have to pay 99.99 euros. Minimum requirements are iOS/iPadOS 15, macOS 12, and VisionOS 2.
