Without the willingness to travel several dozen kilometers on foot, many topics would be inaccessible. Plus, hiking greatly expands your photographic horizons.

In the current issue, landscape photographer Nicholas Alexander Otto reports on how he discovered his love of hiking and offers practical tips on planning, equipment, and motifs.

If you have never hiked before, it is best to start with a day hike. It is important to plan the route carefully and wear weatherproof clothing. Limit your photographic equipment to the essentials. A wide-angle and light telephoto zoom cover most situations. The backpack also includes a compact but stable travel tripod.

The next stage is overnight stay, i.e. a tour with one night stay. So you can take sunset, night and sunrise photos at one place. For this you will also need a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat and more provisions. For beginners, we recommend spending the night in your local area to gain experience.

The final discipline is multi-day hiking. Detailed travel planning is essential here. In addition to the route, it is important to research camping sites, food and water sources in advance. Depending on the length of the steps, you can expect a daily calorie requirement of 3,500 kcal. Light, high-calorie foods such as nuts, dried fruits and energy bars are ideal.

Ultimately, it’s a matter of thinking about your own needs and habits. From clothing to shoes to backpacks, the right equipment emerges with time. The aim is to avoid compromises in terms of photo equipment, but also to save weight when it comes to hiking equipment.

Hiking also opens up new opportunities for photography. Whether it’s your own tent in the landscape, the hiker itself as an attention-grabber or as a path design element – there are no limits to creativity. The inclusion of people also creates a projection surface and awakens the desire to wander in the viewer.

So lace up your hiking shoes, shoulder your backpack and explore new photographic horizons! The efforts are rewarded with unique images and unforgettable nature experiences.

Colors and Emotions: Tilo Gockel has dedicated his article to the influence of colors in photography and image design. He explains how light and spectral colors work and how the color wheel is formed. Using clear image examples, he shows how individual colors such as red, blue or green have emotional and associative effects. He also introduces general color harmonies such as analogous and complementary color harmonies and describes their application in practice. Finally, Gokel shows how you can create and adjust color effects specifically in image editing programs like Photoshop, using so-called lookup tables (LUTs).

Photo bag in test: Anyone who has a camera will one day need a suitable bag to carry it and keep it safe. However, if the photographer does not have a strong collection of bags and wants to use the camera bag beyond his actual needs, he should start looking for the right model. There’s no such thing as a perfect bag, but with some thought beforehand, you can still find the best bag for you. There are many factors to consider, from capacity to accessibility to interior layout and experience. We tested compact camera bags ranging from 20 euros to 600 euros.

Adopt a historical cinema lens: The lenses of old film projectors create images with an incomparable atmosphere. By analogy with modern cameras, effects were created in the focus curve that were never seen on screen. The sensors of digital cameras, which are much larger than the image circle of cinema and short film, allow them to bloom in their full glory. Lenses for photography do not achieve comparable image aesthetics, not only because they are based on radically different optical calculations from a later era.

Medium format camera Fujifilm GFX 100S II in test: Medium format cameras belong in the studio, not on the playing field. They are clunky, cumbersome and cumbersome. This is a widespread opinion that has been true for a long time. Only architectural and some landscape photographers usually carry cumbersome cameras out – and a sturdy tripod is an essential aid. With the medium format models of the GFX family, Fujifilm has always attempted to clean up this legacy image. We put the camera through a sporty test course.
