Formula 1: Designer Newey moves from Red Bull to Aston Martin

Adrian Newey has played a key role in many Formula 1 titles over the past decades. The designer created cars for some teams that later led or dominated. However, the relationship between Newey and his current employer Red Bull has broken down. Newey’s termination became public at the end of April. It is now clear who he will work for in the future: Newey is moving to Aston Martin.

“This is the most exciting news in the history of Aston Martin,” team co-owner Lawrence Stroll said at a press conference. Newey will join as a shareholder and managing technical partner. He will start on March 1, 2025. Newey is moving from Milton Keynes, where Red Bull Racing is headquartered, to Aston Martin’s state-of-the-art headquarters at the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, just a few kilometres away. The racing team of Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll achieved a personnel coup.

Newey has been an engineer in Formula 1 since the 1980s, working at Williams, McLaren and since 2006 has worked for Red Bull. When he arrived, the cars he designed had already won the drivers’ championship six times and the constructors’ championship six times. Red Bull has gone on to win seven more drivers’ and six more team titles. One of Newey’s most difficult hours was the fatal crash of Ayrton Senna in a Williams he designed in 1994.

Newey will leave the team after the first quarter of next year. With Newey’s future involvement, Aston Martin is likely to become even more attractive in the driver market. 43-year-old, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso and Stroll’s son Lance (25) are currently driving for the team. Newey’s influence on Aston Martin can be expected to gradually begin to show from the second half of the 2025 season. Newey will only be jointly responsible as a designer for the car for the 2026 season.
