A standardized dialogue for all firefox extensions: the model replaces the query to funda fundamentally. Already, all extensions have to be indicated that what information you collect from the concerned user. How to design this dialogue depends on every provider of a firefox add-on (addons.mozilla.org-meo). They look different accordingly-which are confused for users, but the Firefox team has also done a lot of work.
Guidelines for control and transparency
Extenses are as popular for browser as it is potentially dangerous: in principle you can read all the information that enters a user. Accordingly, users have to know what data they want to reveal how much they rely on the provider before installing an ad-on. As a result, guidelines for the developers of the extension are widespread. The firefox also emphasizes that the user themselves should always control their data and the collection should be transparent. This is not only applied to the firefox: the dispute around PayPal assistant honey again demonstrated the importance of such guidelines for the add-on.
According to Mozilla, the resulting dialogue does not conform to this standard of control and transparency when installing yet: the difference will confuse users. In addition, the Mozilla team should examine all the extensions offered in the firefox and new versions of them. Since there is no standard for data query, this test is more complex. Finally, the developers themselves also asked for additional work, if they have to decide freely how they want to design the dialogue in such a way that they fulfill Mojil’s guidelines.
Dialogue with alternative data questions
In the future, developers should only be able to specify the data querry required by their expansion in the manifest file. The browser then makes a dialogue from these standardized information, which does not differ from an ad-on in a row to the next. Programmers may also indicate which alternative information you want to collect from the user – for example, for the performance measurement of detail. During installation, users can individually or close these options. After all, the ad-on should already listed on their AMO page they need information.
The schedule for the introduction of the new system has not been determined yet: In announcement Mozilla indicates that it should start in 2025. However, the browser’s night versions should first support new dialogues. To make the switch as simple as possible for developers, Mozilla wants the existing Webextensions permissions api In this way, expand that you also include new optional data surveys. In addition, the ad-on programmers can participate in a specially set survey. In this, you can specify your previous process for this dialogue and explain how you can normally deal with the data query.
