Apple has managed to reduce the so-called jelly scrolling effect on the display of the new iPad Mini. However, this is not the result of hardware changes, as repair service provider iFixit has discovered when opening up the now seventh-generation device. Overall, the repair rate for Apple’s smallest iPad in service is very poor, although some components have also been praised.

Jelly scrolling is a display phenomenon in which parts of an image appear with a slight delay when scrolling. This effect created by left-to-right construction is called jelly scrolling because of its wavering appearance. Users perceive it subjectively in different ways – some are bothered by it, others do not even notice this phenomenon.

On the new iPad mini, jelly scrolling appears to be significantly less, as early tests from heise online confirm. However, it has not disappeared completely, iFixit now insists. An impact on the position and orientation of the display driver was suspected to be the cause or to be fixed. However, a CT scan revealed that the display driver was still in the same location. iFixit suspects that Apple may have fixed the problem using a trick.

One of the other discoveries of the so-called teardown is that the new Mini has the same battery installed as the previous 2021 model. The model number and capacity of 19.19 Wh are the same, It is said in the videoThe battery should also be easily accessible. The USB-C port of the device is easily accessible and replaceable. This is commendable as the device does not support wireless charging. It is also a benefit for repairability and the environment that Apple uses many of the same parts across all model generations – although some changes have been the subject of criticism from the viewpoint of some interested parties.

Still, the iPad Mini only gets a 3 out of 10 for its repairability. This is because the IPS display is glued in place and all other components are behind it. It is difficult to remove the screen without damaging it. There is also criticism that Apple itself does not provide any spare parts or manuals for the Mini. Apple offers a self-service repair program. However, it doesn’t cover the iPad yet.
