According to the announcement, around 260 million GB of data was transmitted across the telecom network nationwide during Euro 2024. Telecom users were particularly busy on the active internet on 5 July: 10.7 million GB passed through the telecom network during the matches between Spain vs Germany and Portugal vs France that day. However, the quarter-final between the Netherlands and Turkey holds the record for a single game, when 5,700 GB of mobile data went through the network in the Berlin Olympic Stadium alone.
Handball brings data records
Particularly controversial moments caused discussion on social media and associated traffic: Marc Cucurella’s late handball in the quarter-final between Germany and Spain achieved a data throughput of more than 2,000 gigabits per second, according to Telekom.
As the provider announced, this controversial scene also gave Vodafone a data record. In the 15 minutes after the handball, Vodafone’s mobile network transmitted more data than ever before – 175 TB in a quarter of an hour. According to Vodafone, this is 50 percent more than usual on Friday evening. In total, more than 225,000 TB are said to have passed through the Vodafone network between June 14 and July 11.
Telefonica recorded less data with its O2 network: 420 million GB of mobile data have passed through the line since the start of the European Championship. Particularly large amounts of data were used during the round of 16 match between Germany and Spain, followed by further games in Germany. The match between the Netherlands and England was the first game without German participation to reach number 4 in O2’s traffic ranking; the game between Turkey and Austria only reached number 8.
