BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 2025: Facelift or all-new?

0

Hand on heart: How many times have you seen a BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe in the wilds of this country? Unless there are special circumstances, this should be an absolute exception. Why BMW is still holding on to this model series and is now, depending on your interpretation, heavily revised or completely renewed, can be easily explained by looking beyond the borders of the EU: the BMW sedan. Certainly in demand in the United States and China. Five years after its launch, the model series is being updated.

BMW has not made any fundamental changes to the previous design. The limousine has become 2 cm longer and now measures approximately 4.55 metres. However, there is not much room for passengers as the wheelbase remains unchanged at 2.67 metres, with the height increasing by 2.5 cm to 1.45 metres. I’ll leave it to the reader to decide whether the BMW kidney grille located below the headlights and the lower air inlet creates a “flat effect that’s tilted toward the road,” as BMW describes it. The trunk remains poor, holding only between 360 and 430 liters depending on the engine. The first press photos show a fully equipped version with the “M Sport Package”, the base one with 17-inch rims shown in the configurator looks quite simple. Unlike newer models above the 5 Series, the optional glass roof in this BMW can be opened.

On the interior, the revised 2 Series Gran Coupe now resembles the recently introduced 1 Series. Here too, two large displays and the OS9 operating system introduced last year dominate. As is now common practice, BMW no longer offers an exhaustive selection of additional features for all equipment lines. There’s no black interior lining or sports steering wheel for the base; Other things are available only in packages. These include, for example, a high beam assistant or an inductive charging cradle.

BMW has also reduced the drive range somewhat. Two petrol and two diesel engines were left. The M235 no longer has a manual transmission, only all-wheel drive for the most powerful gasoline engines. On this basis, alternatives to burning liquid fuels are not expected; The 220 and 220D are mild hybrids with a 48-volt starter generator. The initial proposal is as follows:

Other engines can be imagined, finally the 1 Series has the 116 with 90 kW and the 123 with 160 kW, which shares the platform with the 2 Series Gran Coupe. Given the low customer demand so far, there is little scope for expansion in this country. The 2 Series Gran Coupé will be built in Leipzig, and sales of the revised version will begin in March 2025. The least expensive model, the 220, costs 41,400 euros, with the diesel 218d being slightly more expensive at 41,700 euros. For comparison: a 120 currently costs at least 37,900 euros.
