Location-based lock aims to strengthen data security on Android phones. The optional feature, called “Identity Check”, blocks access to certain data and features when the device is outside of predefined geographic locations. The user can set locations where no identity check is required. Google is thinking specifically about workplaces and homes.

According to Google’s announcement, the block for access to other locations can be removed only through biometric authentication. Some functions are protected: changing the PIN, pattern, password or biometric features to unlock the device, turning off Android anti-theft protection and device location (Find My Device), access to passwords and passkeys in Google Password Manager, password Automatic entry of apps (but not in the Chrome browser), resetting to factory settings, displaying trusted locations, copying data and settings to a new device, remove or add a Google account, access developer options and of course identity verification. Close.
The new function will initially be available on Pixel phones running Android 15 as well as Samsung Galaxy series phones that use the One UI 7 user interface. Android devices from other manufacturers are expected to follow. When identity verification is activated, Advanced Access Protection is automatically activated for the connected Google account and, if applicable, the device’s Samsung account. As always, the release should be gradual, with not all mobile phones covered at the same time.
In October, Google began implementing anti-piracy protection for Android. According to the data group, this has now been completed. All Android phones starting with Android 10 can use the anti-theft feature, except the stripped-down Android Go variants. Since Android 9, each Android version also has a “Go” version. It is a type of operating system adapted to less powerful devices and mobile networks, which also suits the needs of multilingual users. It remains to be seen whether Identity Check will also come to Android Go one day.
