Apple is clearly planning many innovations in screen technology in the coming years. This is reported by industry sources in Asia and a display expert in the United States who have often been right about Apple technology in the past. The changes affect both iPad models and some iPhones.

OLED for everyone, even Apple’s little kids
With the iPad mini 7, Apple introduced a more minimal update in October. Thanks to the new A18 Pro SoC, the compact tablet now supports Apple Intelligence, you can configure more storage space, there is support for the Pencil Pro and the “jelly scrolling” problem has apparently been fixed. But no changes were made in the form factor or screen technology. According to Ross Young at X, Apple is now apparently planning this later. Display industry analyst believes that already Next model with OLED screen Will be equipped as is currently known only with the iPad Pro M4.
This will have many benefits. Apple could make the tablet even (slightly) thinner, increase battery life, and optimize screen brightness and contrast. Currently established LCD technology doesn’t offer any of this, it can’t even do HDR. However, it is unclear when we can expect an iPad mini 8 with OLED. If Apple sticks to the slow update cycle, that probably won’t happen until 2026. However, Apple already released new iPad minis every year, but that was from 2012 to 2015. Then came 2019, 2021 and finally 2024.
LTPO3 for iPhone for better readability
With the iPhone, Apple is believed to want to use a technology that has so far only been found in the Apple Watch Series 10: third-generation low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPO3) that helps improve the energy efficiency of the screen. If it is rarely refreshed. That is, in always-on operation.
South Korean electronics magazine The Elec believes Apple is using LTPO2 in the iPhone 16 Pro Up to LTPO3 in upcoming iPhone models That will change — though not yet with the iPhone 17. This is also believed to help the overall brightness of the screen and can increase viewing angle freedom, which is very helpful with the Series 10 in Watch mode.
