MacBook made of plastic, iPhone 5c made of plastic: Devices wrapped in plastic by Apple in the past have always caused controversy. Some liked the lightness and robustness of the polymers used, others found the variants cheap and preferred steel, aluminum or even titanium. A similar debate is now going on with the Apple Watch: Apple apparently plans to redesign its new entry-level model in the SE series accordingly. This has been reported by various rumor mongers and more recently by the often correct Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

For kids and the young at heart?

The reason is not only that Apple wants to save money, but also that the Apple Watch SE should be marketed more strongly to parents for their offspring. Plastic is “more child-friendly” and the SE can therefore be promoted “as a cell phone alternative for the younger generation”. In addition, better colors are possible this way.
Ultimately, changing the case material would help Apple differentiate the SE from the standard Apple Watch models. At the moment there is hardly any way to differentiate them from a distance, unless Apple uses special colors. The plastic SE would make it clear at first glance that this is the SE and not the “Series 10” that is expected in September. Apple is currently selling the SE in a 40mm version for $249 or 279 euros. Competing entry-level smartwatches are cheaper.
SE with fewer features
There is a possibility that the new Apple Watch SE will have slightly fewer functions than the normal Series 10, even in plastic, for example, the 1-channel ECG is currently missing and there is no Always-On display. The model series is currently updated approximately every two years, promising a third generation this year. It remains to be seen whether Apple will reduce the price or not.
An Apple Watch Series 10 and an Apple Watch Ultra 3 are expected to arrive this year. Meanwhile, there were rumors that Apple could be planning an anniversary watch with a new form factor, but the tenth anniversary of the start of sales actually only takes place in 2025, the Apple Watch was only first presented in 2014;
