AmazonBasics Stereo 2.0: PC speakers for less money

Good sound on a PC or laptop can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be expensive. With its stereo 2.0 speakers for PC from the Basics series, Amazon proves that a significant improvement in sound is possible for less than 20 euros. In a brief test we show what PC speakers are good for.

Despite the low price, Amazon uses not only plastic but also metal for its affordable PC speakers. The front is a well-made metal perforated grill with a (plastic) chrome ring at the top and an aluminum plate in the thick base. The top and back of the conical conical boxes are made of glossy plastic. There is just less than a centimeter of air between the body and the base plate, which makes the speakers seem to float. The manufacturer installs a matte plastic plate with a strong bevel on the aluminum base, which is illuminated from behind. At this point at the back, the blue lighting, which cannot be adjusted in color, is intense, while at the front and sides it is weaker. Nevertheless, the speakers seem more expensive than the 19 euros for which the silver version is already available.

The list of possible connection types is small for a cheap speaker: only a 3.5 millimeter jack connection is available, there is no Bluetooth or other options; both speakers are firmly connected to each other via a cable that is about 100 cm long; the power cable with a USB plug for power supply is also of the same length. The manufacturer installs a simple volume control on the cable at a distance of less than 20 cm from the main speaker.

One thing should be clear: bass should not be expected simply due to the small size and low power consumption of only 5 volts. Even the specification of 80 Hz to 20 kHz seems optimistic in the low frequency range. Nevertheless, the speakers deliver surprisingly clear sound, which, due to the sufficiently wide placement space of about 1 meter, sounds much clearer than the speakers of a flat notebook. In addition, the speakers are likely to be noticeably louder than laptop speakers, even if the sound will quickly sound louder.

Overall, the AmazonBasics speakers deliver a much better sound than we expected, even though we didn’t think we’d want to listen to music for longer periods of time. The small speakers deliver a good figure, especially for speech, for example when watching videos. However, it would be advisable to use an equalizer here to tone down the highs that are usually too loud a bit.

Of course, you can’t enjoy real music with such cheap speakers for laptops and PCs, but at a price of less than 20 euros we expected even less. The AmazonBasics Stereo 2.0 speakers look surprisingly high quality, score points with blue ambient lighting and extremely clear, even slightly more pronounced sound. They are noticeably louder than normal laptop speakers, but deliver just as little bass. For less than 20 euros you can’t do anything wrong with the Amazon speakers.
