News List: Apple reveals details about iOS 18

It won’t be long before iOS 18 arrives: the next major operating system update for iPhones will be available from next Monday, September 16. Many innovations are known. In the future, you can configure the home screen more extensively (including icon placement and color), the Control Center has been completely revised and many apps, including Photos and Messages (RCS support), have undergone extensive changes. If you need a general overview of all the new features, you can now consult Apple in English for help. The company has published a comprehensive PDF this week summarizing more than 250 new functions on 22 pages.

The overview is available for download on Apple’s servers It is also practical because it lists a number of interesting little things that may have been missing during the launch of iOS 18 in June and the subsequent beta phase. What you may initially overlook in the list are the Apple Intelligence functions. The manufacturer mentions them in the PDF, but they will not be available until iOS 18.1 from October, and some will not be available until the end of the year in iOS 18.2. The full feature set of the AI system is not expected to be available before 2025, and in Europe it will probably be available later.

Still, you can learn a lot in PDF. So it can be read that Live voicemail functionwhich has been present since iOS 17, is now finally available in German (but only in Germany, not Switzerland). Other English versions, Spanish, French, Japanese, Chinese and Portuguese are also included. The new Passwords app also collects WiFi passwords and makes accessing them even easier than the system settings. The Wallet app uses “tap to provision”: this means you can simply tap on the device to store your NFC credit or debit cards on your iPhone.

Along with CarPlay, Apple has integrated support for spatial audio (German term: “3D audio”) in iOS 18. However, it only works with certain models, not only with Apple Music, but also supports third-party programs. Spatial audio can also be streamed to an AirPlay-compatible device.

The Home app now allows Matter devices that use WiFi to be controlled directly without a Home Control Center (this is required for Thread and BLE hardware). Once you drag a PDF into a document, the Notes app can search it inline in the future. The live transcription function in Notes, one of the highlights, unfortunately only supports the English language, which Apple confirms in the PDF.
