LG Xboom 360 DXO2T in the test: Bluetooth speaker with all-round sound and light show

Bluetooth speakers are a dime a dozen. To stand out from the crowd, manufacturers are increasingly relying on eye-catching design and extra functions. LG has gone one step further with the Xboom 360 DXO2T, combining 360-degree sound with atmospheric lighting. The teardrop-shaped housing is quite reminiscent of the more expensive Bang & Olufsen Beosound 2 speaker, but can the LG Xboom 360 DXO2T also impress in terms of sound or is it just a cute highlight for the living room? We took a closer look at the unusual Bluetooth speaker.

The LG Xboom 360 DXO2T stands out at first glance due to its unusual design. The teardrop-shaped shape is reminiscent of the much more expensive Bang & Olufsen Beosound 2 speaker and stands out pleasantly from the mass of ordinary Bluetooth speakers. With dimensions of 12 x 21 cm and a weight of about 900 grams, the speaker is not small, but easy to transport.

The most striking design element is the sound diffuser floating above, which is attached to the single-armed boom. It not only provides 360-degree sound, but also has LED lighting. Most of the case is covered in dark fabric, which gives the Xboom 360 DXO2T an elegant look.

However, a closer look also reveals some weak points in the processing. A very noticeable seam runs from top to bottom on the back. The rubber covers for the connections and the on/off switch also appear to be of low quality. The sound diffuser is also made of largely semi-transparent plastic. Overall, the quality of workmanship is fine for the price.

With IP55 certification, the LG Xboom 360 DXO2T is protected against water and dust splashes. There are no obstacles to using it in the garden or on the terrace. In terms of sound, the LG Xboom 360 DXO2T is surprisingly reliable. The highlight is the upward-facing silk dome tweeter, which distributes its sound evenly in all directions through a diffuser. It is complemented by a downward-facing mid/woofer and two hidden passive radiators on the sides. With a total output of 20 watts, the speaker delivers plenty of power.

We already like the sound tuning at standard settings. Activating the “Sound Boost” mode makes things even better. The Xboom 360 DXO2T impresses with great highs and clear lows. Only the bass could be a little stronger. The mids are also easy to distinguish, but in some songs they are a little blurred.

The speaker sounds particularly good with songs containing high-frequency elements such as acoustic guitars. Podcasts also benefit from clear voice reproduction. If you are not completely satisfied with the sound, you can adjust it individually using the equalizer in the app.

The maximum volume of the LG Xboom 360 DXO2T is impressively high. Even at high volumes, the sound barely distorts. But the main highlight is the tweeter itself, which produces an all-round balanced sound thanks to the diffuser.

But the speaker’s extraordinary shape also has disadvantages. This model is therefore less suitable for mobile use than a classic Bluetooth box. For example, there is no carrying strap. The upright speaker can also bend more easily on uneven surfaces.

The LG Xboom 360 DXO2T uses Bluetooth 5.3 as the transmission standard and supports the AAC and SBC codecs. Unfortunately, it cannot be used as a power bank. Users will also have to make do without a 3.5mm jack connection.

The LG Xboom 360 DXO2T is operated via a rubberized on/off switch at the back and five backlit touch buttons on the top. The latter control volume, playback, lighting, and Bluetooth pairing. Unfortunately, they respond only after a delay of about a second.

The associated Xboom app is extremely comprehensive and offers more functions than many competitors. Particularly noteworthy is the equalizer with “Standard” and “Sound Boost” presets. The latter significantly improves the sound. In addition, frequencies can be adjusted individually.

Another highlight is the control of mood lighting. Apart from multiple templates, users can also configure the colors and effects according to their ideas.

Under the menu item “Xboom Laboratory” you can find experimental functions such as “Healing Therapy”. This combines relaxing natural sounds with suitable lighting. Such features underline the speaker’s lifestyle appeal.

The adjustable sleep timer is also practical. As it gets closer to the end, the light gradually dims until it extinguishes along with the music. The app also allows you to pair two LG speakers for stereo sound.

The integrated battery enables up to 15 hours of playback at medium volume. This is a good value for a speaker of this size. A full charge takes about 4 hours.

Minor weaknesses in workmanship and a deep bass slightly spoil the good overall impression. For around 170 euros you can get a versatile Bluetooth speaker that not only sounds good, but also looks good.
