YouTube: More protections against deepfakes and illegally cloned voices planned

YouTube is working on more controls for artists and content creators to protect them from AI copies. According to YouTube, the new technologies are intended to help protect copyright and personal rights as well as promote the “creative potential of AI.” According to YouTube, content creators will have more freedom to decide how third-party companies can use their content on the platform. Details will be given later this year.

To better protect the content of its users, YouTube is currently working on a way to detect cloned voices. The planned function is to be integrated into the “Content ID” tool launched in 2018, a system that YouTubers use to more easily identify and manage their copyrighted content on YouTube. At the request of the authors, the content to be protected is stored in a database along with audio and image files and compared with newly uploaded videos.

As early as 2025, the device should be able to recognize cloned voices of its own — initially in a pilot phase. If a match is found, “a Content ID claims Lifted to matching video”, Youtube tells. This can then lead to measures such as blocking or monetising the content.

In addition, YouTube is developing a technology that can detect and manage AI-generated deepfakes on YouTube. In November 2023, YouTube called for more action against cloned music from artists based on existing music. The rapid development of generic AI music tools had sparked fears about plagiarism and copyright infringement among musicians. In an open letter earlier in the year, more than 200 artists called for the responsible development of AI to protect artists’ livelihoods.

Another tool, which is in development on youtubeTherefore, the platform should be able to recognize deepfakes of faces of people “ranging from creative people and actors to musicians and athletes.” The system is still in active development, and YouTube has not yet indicated when it is expected to launch.

YouTube also says it will take strong action against those who use the platform to develop AI tools. Unauthorized access to content from content creators violates the terms of service. Nevertheless, many companies such as Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic have trained their AI systems using thousands of scraped YouTube videos. Protection against this includes preventing scraping and investing in content collection detection systems.
