WhatsApp is currently testing new artificial intelligence functions within the messaging app. The current beta version of WhatsApp lets users examine images by AI and alter them as desired. This can be used, for example, to identify objects in images or remove unwanted objects from images. The operator Meta platform offers its own channel called “Meta AI”, to which images with corresponding questions or requirements are sent.

This is the second new AI function for the messaging app in just a few days, as another beta version of WhatsApp with an AI function for personalized avatars was recently released. This allows users to create avatars of themselves in the messenger, in any environment you can imagine: “from the jungle to outer space”.
WhatsApp’s new AI image function is likely to be based on Meta’s AI image generator “Imagine”, which will also be integrated into WhatsApp soon, as shown in a previous beta version (2.24.12.4). WhatsApp’s latest beta version 2.24.14.20 now uses Meta AI’s generative AI not only to create images, but also to make changes to other images and perform more detailed checks.
WhatsApp as a tourist guide chatbot?
As the screenshot from WABetaInfo shows, the Meta AI accepts images and responds according to the commands sent with them. Users can ask questions about the image to find out what or who is depicted there. The AI ​​should also be able to provide contextual information, for example about historical buildings or landmarks.

In addition, Meta AI can edit sent images, making change requests expressed in words. How WABetaInfo writesthe user has control over the images so that they can be deleted at any time. It is not known whether the Meta platform or WhatsApp saves the sent images and possibly evaluates them for their own purposes. After all, these conversations are also encrypted – as is the case with WhatsApp.
These AI features of WhatsApp are currently under development and should be available to all users of the messaging app later. However, Meta AI is not currently available in the European Union and therefore in Germany. This means that it will probably take some time for image testing and changes through AI within WhatsApp to be possible in this country, even if they are available in North America.
