This much is clear: the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro are just around the corner, the iPhone 17 series will arrive in autumn 2025 and so on. Customers have long been able to set the clock according to Apple’s annual iPhone releases. While the generational steps were once huge, now progress is slower and requires detailed refinements. Apple is now taking the iPhone 12 design into the fifth generation – this has never been done before. The rumour mill only expects major innovations in the line-up for 2025 and beyond.

In episode 80, Malte Kirchner and Leo Becker only briefly touched on the iPhone 16. We’re more concerned about what will happen to the iPhone in the long term. In addition to looking at advancements in smartphone cameras and generative image AI, we’re also taking a look at the speculated “iPhone 17 Slim/Air/Ultra”, which could be a breath of fresh air.

Also growing competition from foldables, high quality affordable Android, and last but not least, AI and regulation pose risks to the iPhone as a platform with its massive App Store ecosystem.
