Business historians swear that some of the most valuable lessons can be learned from the history of failed companies and products. But it’s also a fact that artifacts of failure usually disappear quickly. Dame wants that (English language) Failure Museum By Shawn Jacobsohn. The business software manager and venture capitalist has compiled items from nearly 400 case studies, which he explains in an entertaining way with professional photos and short texts.
Jacobsohn gave six reasons for the failure of products or entire companies. This includes financial aspects, such as Apple’s overpriced “Lisa” from 1983, for example. But the target group or the competition can also be decisive factors. This was, for example, the case of a search engine called AltaVista, which fell victim to the superior algorithm of a certain Google. You can browse these reasons or by the categories companies, products, games and toys.
The no-frills website is great fun to click through. The selection is heavily USA-biased, but there are also internationally renowned representatives such as Sony’s Betamax video system and photo equipment manufacturer Kodak. Anyone who wishes can also donate new artworks to Jacobsohn’s collection.
