Safety training is usually boring. Not so with serious games Fishing Masters. The website visitor enters a virtual computer room filled with desks and sits in front of a monitor. Realistically designed emails appear on it, and sometimes chat histories too. The first round consisting of six such screens serves as an introduction. The player’s task is to correctly read web addresses and recognize dangerous links and suspicious attachments.
During the briefing, there are detailed instructions for each task as to whether or not the message shown is suspicious and why. How to use the anti-phishing weapon, which is used to target dangerous messages, is also explained: It can be aimed at a target using a joystick or mouse and then fired . If everything is OK, the player instead aims at a sign saying “Valid” at the bottom of the screen.
The actual game round consists of ten tasks without any assistance. The fact that you play against time and the faster you react the more points you get, boosts motivation, but sometimes reduces the amount of knowledge you gain. Luckily, after completing each round, you can revisit all the tasks and study the instructions at your leisure.
