Blocks Artist Günter Demnig is helping to prevent the memory of Nazi-era atrocities from fading away across the country. These are brass paving stones buried in the ground, the tops of which look like small memorial plaques. Demnig moved these to the pavements in front of the former homes of victims of National Socialism. Each stab bears the name of a victim, their date of birth and their fate.
The website WDR has around 17,000 roadblocks in North Rhine-Westphalia Stumbling blocks haunt NRW Recorded. The map is also available as an app for Android and iOS. Biographical articles, illustrations, radio plays and historical photographs bring to life the fate of the victims and their relatives. A school section on the website provides tips and materials for teaching in secondary school.
