Vision Pro successor may have half the pixel density

According to new reports from the supply chain, Apple plans to significantly reduce the resolution of a new version of the Vision Pro. The new model is aimed at beginners and is significantly cheaper than the current minimum of 3,999 euros that Apple is charging according to the price list.

Korean business magazine The Elec writes that Apple has already received a display OLED panel from Japanese provider JDI. Which will have around 1500 ppi (pixels per inch).. This would also more than halve the pixel density, which is currently said to be 3391 ppi. The iPhone maker previously requested samples from Samsung Display that should achieve 1700 ppi. JDI uses processes that current micro-OLED supplier Sony already uses in the Vision Pro. It said the new displays would use an OLED-on-silicon process (OLEDoS).

Inquiries are also said to have been made to Apple’s other important screen supplier LG Display from South Korea. Here too, the “request for information” (RFI), which should lead to a demo panel, mentions a resolution of around 1700 ppi. With this pixel density, Apple hopes to obtain a sufficient quality display while at the same time significantly reducing the purchase price for the components. For comparison: the Meta Quest 3 currently has 1218 ppi, which is quite low.

Taiwanese electronics magazine DigiTimes has also heard that Apple is interested in 1500 ppi OLEDs. The RFIs are in the first half of the year Samsung Display is said to be able to achieve around 1500 ppi with its glass core substrate process, and a production line for it is reportedly ready, though potential volumes are still unclear.

What installing a cheaper display in the “Vision” (without Pro) will mean in practice is still unclear. However, the price could possibly drop below 2000 euros – at least that’s what Apple hopes. At the moment, the Vision Pro is priced in a range aimed primarily at professionals – and people who want the best screen currently available, including the appropriate hardware. Meta is going in the other direction and has just announced the Quest 3S, an even cheaper model than the Quest 3.
