Vision Pro: Brain interface coming soon – and tandem OLED display?

Apple’s Vision Pro is said to be the first to be controlled via a brain interface. There are also rumors that Apple is planning a new screen with special features for mixed reality headsets. Both pieces of information came to us from the US and South Korea this week.

A company specializing in neurotechnology Dubbing from New York City reports that their in-house brain-computer interface (BCI) now also works with Apple Glass. It was tested on a 64-year-old patient suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), who was able to use it to move the cursor, watch TV shows, and send text messages. Synchron writes that he was even able to play solitaire this way in a press release,

Apple has already integrated various functions in the field of accessibility. The Synchron BCI is based on this and can also be used to control an iPhone, Mac or iPad. The BCI should also be able to be controlled by people who cannot operate various devices with their hands or using voice commands. According to Synchron, it is implanted into a blood vessel on the surface of the motor cortex and inserted through the jugular vein. This is done in the minimally invasive way possible. The system is then designed to receive instructions from the patient’s brain.

Another Vision Pro news comes from Asia. Sisa Journal reports there Try it out by AppleTo shrink the well-known tandem OLED display of the iPad Pro M4 to a size suitable for a headset. The idea is apparently that this will be done in collaboration with one of Apple’s suppliers from South Korea, such as LG Display or Samsung Display.

These could create micro-tandem OLEDs with greater brightness and lower power consumption by 2026 and would likely be cheaper than the current 4K screens Apple is buying from Sony. Micro-tandem OLEDs should have a longer lifespan than regular micro-OLEDs, hopes Samsung Display & Co. The technology is also being tested in China by the – not always reliable – Apple supplier BOE.
