The word guessing game World became a viral hit in 2022 thanks to its entertaining game concept and new daily tasks. So far you can only play Wordle in the browser, whether on desktop or mobile. Now the New York Times, which bought World in 2022, has published its first app – for VR glasses from Meta, of all things.

The app can be downloaded for free from Meta’s Quest Store. Basically, it’s exactly the same version you play in the browser. So you have six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Every day there’s a new puzzle to solve – only in VR. You select letters with the search controller or simply by hand.
“Creative way to reach audience”
“We’re always looking for unique and creative ways to reach our audiences with our games,” says Jonathan Knight, New York Times games chief, on Meta’s Quest blog. “This collaboration reflects our enthusiasm for exploring innovative technologies and new formats and experiences like mixed reality.” Knight explains that Wordle is perfect for virtual reality because of its simple interface.
Wordle was originally created by developer Josh Wardle. After the browser game became a viral hit with its daily new puzzle task, The New York Times struck out for a low seven-figure sum, as it said in a statement at the time.
Both the browser version and the new VR version of Wordle can be played for free. However, because only one puzzle is offered each day, you can usually finish it after a few minutes. It is questionable whether wearing VR glasses is advisable. However, it is conceivable that VR users simply speak the words briefly before switching to their actual game.
