Ubisoft postpones “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” again after player criticism

As part of a strategic update for the entire company, Ubisoft has announced further postponements of the upcoming game title “Assassin’s Creed Shadows”. The game, which has been heavily criticized on the internet, was originally scheduled to release in mid-November 2024, but was previously postponed to February 14 this year. It is now being said that the next title of the Assassin’s Creed series will be available on March 20, 2025.

“As part of a renewed focus on game quality and exciting day-one experiences, the decision has been made to allow an additional month of development for Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” Ubisoft writes. “This additional time will allow the team to better take into account player feedback collected over the past three months and work closely with the increasingly positive Assassin’s Creed community to create the best conditions for launch.”

“Assassin’s Creed Shadows” takes fans of the role-playing game to 16th century Japan, where for the first time since “Assassin’s Creed Syndicate” they can control two identical heroes: Nao, a shinobi assassin, and Yasuke, A historically documented samurai of African descent. , But Yasuke in particular seems to have a different opinion. Many criticize Ubisoft for highlighting a person of color in historical Japan.

It is unclear whether it was criticism of Yasuke’s character that prompted Ubisoft to postpone the game’s release date by approximately five weeks. Developers explain on X (formerly Twitter) that “a few additional weeks are needed to implement fan feedback.” The aim is to create “an even more challenging and exciting experience on the first day”.

Ubisoft said goodbye to the Season Pass model it used previously, with more expensive versions offering a few days of early access and cosmetic items, as well as special missions for those who pre-order. This was also planned for “Assassin’s Creed Shadows,” but Ubisoft had already angered “Star Wars Outlaws” fans with a similar strategy. Instead, the gaming company promised that all buyers would be able to play it at the same time. However, those who pre-order will get the first expansion pack for free. In addition, Ubisoft, in a deep crisis, has turned back to Steam and is offering its games again on this PC platform.

In Ubisoft’s strategic update It is mainly about the economic aspects of the company. The company announced that it will be able to save more than 200 million euros in fixed costs in the upcoming financial year 2025/2026 compared to the financial year 2022/2023. This is due to the fact that Ubisoft will be shutting down the Free2Play shooter “Xdefiant” and closing three development studios as they are located in locations with high salary costs.
