Twitter rival Bluesky benefits from X ban in Brazil


Blocking Elon Musk’s online platform The makers of the app announced over the weekend that they had gained one million new users in the past few days. According to media reports, X, formerly Twitter, has about 20 million users in the South American country.

X was blocked in Brazil by Supreme Federal Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes. He has long accused the service of not taking decisive action against hate speech and the spread of fake news. The controversy recently escalated after a judge ordered X to block the accounts of right-wing activists who spread conspiracy theories and misinformation. Musk called the request illegal, and the online platform did not comply with the request – and did not pay the fine.

When Musk also missed an ultimatum demanding that Brazil appoint a legal representative, Moraes on Friday ordered the blocking. Musk, on his part, cited freedom of expression and called the judge an “evil dictator.”

Bluesky and other competing offerings have enjoyed some popularity in recent years from users who disliked the shift to the right on Twitter and X after Musk bought them in October 2022. The tech billionaire and head of electric carmaker Tesla himself supports positions of the American right, whose views he spreads to his nearly 190 million followers on X every day.

However, various apps have not yet been able to achieve the meaning of X. The most popular of the X alternatives is Threads from the Facebook group Meta, which currently has about 200 million monthly active users. There is also evidence of the popularity of Twitter alternatives Ranking of free iPhone apps. In Brazil, Bluesky topped the charts on both Saturday and Sunday, ahead of Threads.
